The Relationship Between Harm Avoidance Temperament and Internalizing Problems of University Students: The Double Mediating Effects of Ego Resiliency and Cognitive Emotion Regulation

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of harm avoidance temperament on internalizing problems and to access the double mediating effects of ego resiliency and cognitive emotion regulation between them. The findings were as follow: First, harm avoidance had negative effect on ego resiliency. Ego resiliency had positive effect on adaptive cognitive emotion regulation and negative effect on maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation. Adaptive cognitive emotion regulation had negative effect on internalizing problems. Maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation had positive effect on internalizing problems. Second, maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation had a mediating effect on harm avoidance and internalizing problems. Third, ego resiliency and adaptive cognitive emotion regulation had double mediating effect between harm avoidance and internalizing problems. Finally, ego resiliency and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation had double mediating effect between harm avoidance and internalizing problems. The significance and limitations of the study, and directions for future research are presented.
